How to trim a video and keep the quality
Most clips start a moment too early and end a moment too late. Trimming removes the parts you do not want, and it is also the quickest way to make a large video smaller.
Choose the cut points
Drag the Start handle to where the good part begins and the End handle to where it finishes. The preview jumps to each point as you move it, so you can see exactly what the first and last frames will be. The shortest clip you can keep is half a second.
Quick cuts and exact cuts
When your cut falls close to a natural break in the video, the trim is very quick and the quality is exactly what it was. In that case the result may start up to a quarter of a second before the point you chose. When the cut falls somewhere else, the video is made again from your start point. That takes longer but starts exactly where you asked.
Trimming to reduce size
Length is the biggest thing you control. A video that is half as long is roughly half the size. If a file is too big for an email or a form, trim it to the part that matters first, then compress it if it is still too large. You can do both without uploading anything.
Small habits that help
- Leave about a second of calm before and after the action so the clip does not feel abrupt.
- Check the last frame in the preview. A cut one moment too early can chop a sentence or a movement in half.
- Keep the original until you have played the trimmed file all the way through.
